The Power of the Goddess
Days like the last few are great reminders to us that the Goddess can be both a taker and destroyer just as much as she can be a loving giver and creator. All of us, in some way or another, have been affected by the news that has come out of Haiti since the earthquake on January 12th. The images we have seen on the news, the photos on various websites that have been reporting from the ravaged areas and the tales from the scene of the aftermath have been heart breaking. So many have had a taste of the destructive side of Mother Nature and many of us a world away feel the pain with them.
Here in Southern California we’re also seeing some of the harsher side of the Great Mother and storms are ripping through our area with everything from high winds, heavy rain, flooding, and even tornadoes that have touched down in a few places and caused some damage. Just a few weeks ago I moved three blocks from the Pacific, a dream I’ve had for some time. I’m an ocean girl, I need to be near the water and all the better that it be the ocean. After having spent time talking with the Gods, doing some journey work with my Spirit Guides and a nice dose of divination to round it out, I had decided it was time to move to the ocean; all signs pointed to “yes” and I was shocked to find that I was able to find an apartment for far less then I was already paying, in the exact location I was looking and only three blocks from the beach (I’ll admit some magick did go into this venture). A week after moving in a major winter storm comes along and now I’m living with the ocean closer than three blocks away! The ocean, as they say, is a seductress and when her dark side comes out, it comes out in spades.
We are seeing horrible beach erosion, vegetation being swept away, trees uprooted and property damage of all sorts from the flooding when it happens. A few days ago, as another round of the storms were heading in, I took a walk out to the beach to see how bad the waters were that morning and I grabbed a few pictures.
Sometimes we forget that the Goddess has a destructive side. We become so enraptured by the power of the loving and light-filled side of the Goddess that we forget that she can rip apart that which she creates in seconds. When you see things like this in your own backyard, it brings that message home pretty quickly. While stories from other parts of the world are reminders as well, being in that path of destruction is even more of a reminder.
